Discovering cell-fiber interactions

Cells in the body are surrounded by the extracellular matrix (ECM), which is composed of nano-micro fibrous proteins, non-fibrous proteins, proteoglycans, and various cytokines. These continuously provide biochemical and biophysical cues to cells, and any changes in ECM can influence physiological and pathological outcomes. We aim to discover new rules in how cells recognize fibers and how fiber network attributes affect cellular outcomes. Using our patented non-electrospinning Spinneret based Tunable Engineered Parameters (STEP) fiber manufacturing platform, we have demonstrated a remarkable sensitivity of cells to suspended fibers with and without biochemical stimuli.
